Sayuri,a young girl with beautifully rare, gray eyes,becomes one of Japan's most celebrated geisha after she is sold to a representative of a geisha house.
This book tells her tale as she goes through all the hardships these women had to face. Imagine being taken away from your family? Imagine having to sleep on a wooden pillow so your hair won't get messed up, because if it does its going to hurt alot to get it fixed. Imagine being in love with someone who's many years you senior. An intriguing love triangle, a terrible rival, an ally or two; this is what sayuri has to face.
Believe me, you don't have to be of asian heritige to read this novel. Its a great book to simply pick up and read just for the heck of it. There's plenty of history, romance, and tells just about everything there is to know about the Geisha culture in an interesting, fiction way. Warning: there might be some things that are a bit inapropriate for younger teens. Its an adult book, but once again its mostly due to the difficulty of the vocabulary. The author isn't very descriptive in THAT department.
Recommended to: older teens who want a challenge

I haven't read this one yet, but you might like Autobiography of a Geisha by Sayo Masuda. Memoirs portrays the more glamorous lives of big-city geisha, while the Autobiography is about the far less glamorous lives of the hot-springs geisha, who were basically oiran (prostitutes).
