You know, there are really very few books out there that you know you will remember for the rest of your life. One of those books that really touched you, became a chapter in your own life. The Book Thief is one of those books. Not only is it compelling, establishes a sense of realness that most books lack, and gives the reader a whole cast of characters to cherish and love, it is so beautifully written that it is almost an art. Zusak adds a whole new perspective to life and the way things are. Words are his magic. He can inspire images and feelings with just a sentence or two.
The book is set in Nazi Germany. The book is unerringly accurate, with a thereness that is tangible. Through the eyes of Liesel, a small orphan, Zusak sheds light on a whole new Germany. Yes, they were terrible and cruel times, but he shows that not all Germans idolized Hitler. Some resisted.
The book is a must read. Not only is it the most well-written book I've ever come across, but it can take you to places that you never even knew existed and assist you in entering lives that can better help you understand your own. The Book Thief belongs on every reader's shelf.
