This novel was something one of the two books I had to read in the summer because I'm in an Honors English class. This story takes place in 1964 South Carolina about a 14 year old girl named Lily who lives with her abusive father, T. Ray and the housemaid Rosaleen. After Rosaleen is arrested for pouring her bottle of "snuff juice" on three white men, Lily breaks her out of the hospital and they decide to leave town. They begin hitchhiking toward Tiburon, SC, a place written on the back of an image of the Virgin Mary as a black woman, which Deborah, her mother, had owned. They meet the Boatwright sisters, who own a honey business. Lily finds more about her mother who she had not seen since she was little, and discovers more about herself...

I would recommend this to: Teens ages 13 and up
