Twilight

I really don't get the hype of this book.

First, the plot was nonexistent until 7/8 of the way into the book. A plot-less romance is just unforgivable, especially in such a large novel.

Next, is the romance. For some reason, no one seems to notice there was no reasonable basis for Bella and Edward to fall in love. There was no actual romantic build up. Edward just disliked her and then felt like saving her. Bella pretty much falls for Edward based on looks. Most of the book is just them doing something together or her doing something and thinking about him.

Finally, we have the characters. I absolutely can't stand "Mary Sues" or the male version of it. Every one of the vampires was too perfect. The only vampire I even remotely liked was Alice. She, at least, had a unique personality. Bella's personality is totally dependent on Edward. Without him, she is practically a blank page. Some people might argue "She was meant to be a common girl. A girl who could represent almost anyone." I disagree. As I stated earlier, she is a blank page. Generalizing by using the term "common" is incorrect. In our society today, finding a girl with Bella's personality is almost impossible. Therefore, she is not "common."

In a novel that had potential, these are my opinions. There was barely any plot, development, or conflict. Overall, this book was just boring.

Recommended to: No one.

I totally agree with a LOT of what you say here. This book was really a page turner for me; I couldn't put it down and felt swept away by the romance....but whenever I really stop to *think* about the characters, I don't like them and the relationship between Edward and Bella seems really unhealthy, almost abusive. He's really controlling and while she might be strong and independent with her parents, she's totally helpless once he comes into her life. I think (but I'm not sure) that you might like Jacob's character in the rest of the series. Not sure if it's worth your time....so many other good bks out there.

I must completly disagree with what you say.
I think that the plot of this story, is of this boy, or man, Edward, an absolutly beautiful man, who has never fallen in love before within his 104 years of his life, falls in love with this average girl.
How she won his heart, even though she is not pretty, not rich, she is not fashionable, and not unique.
It shows other girls that you dont have to be anything special in order for someone to fall in love with you. And that he fell in love with her scent, is telling us that we cant just fall in love with any person, but theres the right one. There is that feeling, to where you just know it, like her scent to him. He stays with her, wanting to protect her from harm. Like any man would do.

Edward is controlling, now that you mention it. Especially in later books. In New Moon, he doesn't ask for her opinion before leaving, in Eclipse he doesn't want her to hang out with the werewolves. She is independent, until she begins depending on Edward.

Missy, you're right, Bella isn't special or rich or anything that usually attracts boys, but she is pretty, it's mentioned several times in the books. Why else would all of those other boys want to go out with her (Mike, Eric, Tyler, Jacob as well as Edward). The books are just a little bit unrealistic because we rarely find a perfect partner on our first try. That would explain the divorce rate in this country.

Missy, I am sorry to say this, but I don't agree. People do not fall in love just 'cause. They need a reason, something that makes that person stand out for them. The only thing that stood out for Edward was her scent, and that shouldn't be enough to fall in love with someone.
I agree with this review completely. The book had practically now plot, no character development, and quite frankly is an unhealthy example for teenage relationships. I, like you, hate Mary Sues Or Gary Stews.
