The first book in the A Secret Refuge series. This story is about an 18-year-old girl named Jesselynn Highwood, in 1860, during the Civil War. When her father dies she has no choice, but to take her little brother and her family's remaining Thoroughbreds to her uncle's farm in Missouri. The only way to do that safely is to become a boy. But the trip is dangerous, with soldiers on both sides hungry for horses and doing anything to get them. This is a great book. You should read it.
