It's summer 1899 in Texas, Calpurnia is the only girl in a family of boys, her mother tries to teach her cooking, piano and sewing and knitting, but she is far more interested in what is behind the library doors, or why there are yellow grasshoppers and green grasshoppers in that summer, with the help of her grandfather, Walter Tate, she slowly begins to be interested in naturalism.
