Tweak

Tweak

An autobiography in its truest form, "Tweak" is the story of Nic Sheff's battle, past and present, to overcome his addiction to methamphetamines, heroin, crack-cocaine, alcohol, and nicotine. Nic describes his struggle to overcome his addictions in a world that is unloving and uncaring towards him.

However, Nic's story is not the sappy story of "the young boy who overcomes fate through the power of love and family" and other junk like that. No, Nic tells bluntly how he fought to overcome a demon he created himself through years of hard using. Nic also does not relapse once, then overcome his addiction through an “epiphany” through which he finds love. Ew. Instead Nic relapses time and time again, hitting what feels like rock bottom a half dozen times throughout the novel. Nic’s story is a true and accurate representation of the combat between addict-ee and addiction.

Nic’s story inspires the reader to feel as he feels. You feel high when Nic is on crystal meth, you feel broken when his father tells him he’s done. But all through this you can see he truly is a good person who got messed up. Bad.

If I had ever wavered, this story showed me that I do have the power to abstain from controlled substances. I fail to see how anyone can bear to go through what he does every day. Truly this is an inspiring novel, one that I believe anyone should read to understand that their life is truly “charmed” by comparison to what everyday people face every day. :]

Recommended to: Everyone! Mainly teenagers and adults. Not for young kids though due to explicit language and content.
