The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is about a deaf-mute, a Negro doctor, a 12-year old tom-boy, a restaurant owner, and a drunken communist.

The deaf-mute is the confidante for all of the other characters. Everyone comes to him and tells him their stories. They all seem to feel they have some "greater connection" with him, even though he might not even be able to understand what they are saying.

This is a VERY well written book, full of depth and great emotion. I enjoyed this book a lot, and it was one I had to read for school. Great plot line with lots of different topics, like Communism, racial discrimination, the great depression and more!
