"Your very existence is your sin."

Oz Vessalius [Bezarius- for some sources dictate otherwise] is the heir of the Vessalius dukedom, and he has turned fifteen, and as society dictates, he must perform the coming-of-age ceremony before he is acknowledged by the Four Duke Houses.

He is of the adventurous spirit, dragging along with him, his cat-phobia maniac Gilbert and his little, lovely sister Ada- having the grandest times. But... as the coming-of-age ceremony approaches, mysterious figures are preparing for the final curtain of an even more ambiguous play. Soon, Oz- amidst his ceremony- is sent to the darkest of all hells and prisons that shakes any human in their pants- the Abyss.

The Abyss is said to be a paradox of dangerous Chains- monsters who feed off humans and those who were dragged under, condemned for their heinous actions.

Once there, Oz meets Alice, a girl with no memory, but also an extraordinary chain, B-Rabbit, and he escapes with her back to his world, which seems to have uprooted itself in the time he was gone.

I enjoyed this immensely, and desite how most first couple of books in a series tend to start off slow, there's still a ton of action going on. Many illusions and parallels to Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" exist in this manga, and being a fan, I find that this spin on it is definitely original since other elements of this fantasy contradict the fantasy of Wonderland. It's a bit darker, but the light-heated humor makes the contrast intriguing. I could go on, but I believe it's an amazing pick-me-up should you find yourself out of books to read; the drawings are fantastic as well!
